Man with bionic leg to climb Chicago skyscraper Associated Press - Wednesday, October 31, 2012 CHICAGO (AP) — Zac Vawter considers himself a test pilot. After losing his right leg in a motorcycle accident, the 31- year-old software engineer signed up to become a research subject, helping to test a trailblazing prosthetic leg that's controlled by his thoughts. He will put this groundbreaking bionic leg to the ultimate test Sunday when he attempts to climb 103 flights of stairs to the top of Chicago's Willis Tower, one of the world's tallest skyscrapers. If all goes well, he'll make history with the bionic leg's public debut. His whirring, robotic leg will respond to electrical impulses from muscles in his hamstring. Vawter will think, "Climb stairs," and the motors, belts and chains in his leg will synchronize the movements of its ankle and knee. Vawter hopes to make it to the top in an hour, longer than it would've taken before his amputation, less time than it would take with his normal prosthetic leg — or, as he calls it, his "dumb" leg. A team of researchers will be cheering him on and noting the smart leg's performance. When Vawter goes home to Yelm, Wash., where he lives with his wife and two children, the experimental leg will stay behind in Chicago. Researchers will continue to refine its steering. Taking it to the market is still years away. "Somewhere down the road, it will benefit me and I hope it will benefit a lot of other people as well," Vawter said about the research at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Bionic — or thought-controlled — prosthetic arms have been available for a few years, thanks to pioneering work done at the Rehabilitation Institute. With leg amputees outnumbering people who've lost arms and hands, the Chicago researchers are focusing more on lower limbs. Safety is important. If a bionic hand fails, a person drops a glass of water. If a bionic leg fails, a person falls down stairs. The Willis Tower climb will be the bionic leg's first test in the public eye, said lead researcher Levi Hargrove of the institute's Center for Bionic Medicine. The climb, called "SkyRise Chicago," is a fundraiser for the institute with about 2,700 people climbing. This is the first time the climb has played a role in the facility's research. To prepare, Vawter and the scientists have spent hours adjusting the leg's movements. On one recent day, 11 electrodes placed on the skin of Vawter's thigh fed data to the bionic leg's microcomputer. The researchers turned over the "steering" to Vawter. He kicked a soccer ball, walked around the room and climbed stairs. The researchers beamed. Vawter likes the bionic leg. Compared to his regular prosthetic, it's more responsive and more fluid. As an engineer, he enjoys learning how the leg works. It started with surgery in 2009. When Vawter's leg was amputated, a surgeon repositioned the residual spaghetti-like nerves that normally would carry signals to the lower leg and sewed them to new spots on his hamstring. That would allow Vawter one day to be able to use a bionic leg, even though the technology was years away. The surgery is called "targeted muscle reinnervation" and it's like "rewiring the patient," Hargrove said. "And now when he just thinks about moving his ankle, his hamstring moves and we're able to tell the prosthesis how to move appropriately." To one generation it sounds like "The Six Million Dollar Man," a 1970s TV show featuring a rebuilt hero. A younger generation may think of Luke Skywalker's bionic hand. But Hargrove's inspiration came not from fiction, but from his fellow Canadian Terry Fox, who attempted a cross-country run on a regular artificial leg to raise money for cancer research in 1980. "I've run marathons, and when you're in pain, you just think about Terry Fox who did it with a wooden leg and made it halfway across Canada before cancer returned," Hargrove said. Experts not involved in the project say the Chicago research is on the leading edge. Most artificial legs are passive. "They're basically fancy wooden legs," said Daniel Ferris of the University of Michigan. Others have motorized or mechanical components but don't respond to the electrical impulses caused by thought. "This is a step beyond the state of the art," Ferris said. "If they can achieve it, it's very noteworthy and suggests in the next 10 years or so there will be good commercial devices out there." The $8 million project is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and involves Vanderbilt University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rhode Island and the University of New Brunswick. Vawter and the Chicago researchers recently took the elevator to the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower to see the view after an afternoon of work in the lab. Hargrove and Vawter bantered in the elevator in anticipation of Sunday's event. Hargrove: "Am I allowed to trash talk you?" "It's fine," Vawter shot back. "I'll just defer it all to the leg that you built." At the top, Vawter stood on a glass balcony overlooking the city. The next time he heads to the top, he and the bionic leg will take the stairs.

Astronauts take spacewalk to find ammonia leak Associated Press - 1 hr ago CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Two spacewalking astronauts worked on a leaky radiator system outside the International Space Station on Thursday, just hours after barely dodging a menacing piece of orbiting junk. NASA ordered the space station to change position Wednesday evening to avoid a fragment from a communication satellite that was destroyed in a high- speed collision three years ago. Thrusters on a docked Russian supply ship were fired to move the orbiting lab out of harm's way. But a computer error caused the thrusters to malfunction and the space station did not reach the desired altitude. NASA officials said the space station and its six residents were safe despite their lower- than-intended orbit. Space station commander Sunita Williams and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide successfully rerouted ammonia coolant lines and bypassed a radiator believed to be leaking. They isolated the suspect radiator to help flight controllers determine in the coming days whether that, indeed, is the source of the ammonia seepage. "We've got smiles all around," Mission Control radioed. Engineers theorize that bits of space junk may have penetrated the radiator or part of its system. Another possibility is that the 12-year-old equipment simply cracked. The radiators are needed to dissipate heat generated by electronic equipment aboard the space station. Toxic ammonia is used as the coolant, and the spacewalkers took care to avoid contamination. One or two frozen flakes of ammonia harmlessly struck Hoshide's helmet. Thursday's spacewalk provided some deja vu for Williams. In 2007, she retracted the spare radiator being brought into service Thursday. "Nice to see it deployed again," she said. A small leak was detected in this area in 2007. Spacewalking astronauts added extra ammonia last year to shore up the system, but this past summer, the leakage increased fourfold. At that rate, the affected power channel could be offline by the end of the year. That's why Thursday's spacewalk was ordered up, even though it comes just 2½ weeks before the departure of Williams and Hoshide. The two are scheduled to return to Earth on Nov. 19, after a four-month mission. Within 5½ hours of going out, Williams and Hoshide had accomplished the bulk of their work. Williams asked how the four guys inside were doing. Busy, but still able to catch some of the spacewalking action, replied U.S. astronaut Kevin Ford. "We'll have tea on for you," Ford promised. The spacewalk lasted 6½ hours and bumped Williams into the No. 5 position of most experienced spacewalkers. She has spent 50 hours and 40 minutes out in the vacuum of space over seven spacewalks, the most by a woman.

honda in trouble

Honda has said it will recall nearly 500,000 cars after a fault was found that could lead to the driver's door catching fire.
The Japanese carmaker said the recall was announced after it found water may enter the power window switch on the door, which could ultimately cause the switch to overheat, melt and catch fire.
It said the recall affected about 489,000 CR-V sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in Europe (Chicago Options: ^REURUSD - news) and the United States.
Some 220,000 CR-Vs in Europe and around 268,000 in the US would be examined. Another 100 in Africa were also being recalled.
Honda said all the recalled vehicles are from model years 2002 through to 2006.
There have been reports of five switch fires, but no crashes or injuries have been reported related to the issue, Honda said.
CR-V owners have been advised to park cars outside and away from structures as a safety precaution, as a fire could start even when the ignition is off.
But spokesman Ed Miller emphasised that a switch is unlikely to catch fire unless someone spilled liquid on it or let a large amount of rain into the vehicle through an open driver's window.
Honda, Japan (EUREX: FMJP.EX - news) 's third-largest vehicle manufacturer, did not give estimated costs for the huge recall.
The safety alert comes days after it recalled more than 600,000 Accord cars in North America over fears of a power steering fluid leak causing engine bay fires.
Earlier last week, it also recalled 820,000 Civic cars and Pilot SUVs because of headlights failures.
The company will begin contacting CR-V owners in November (Xetra: A0Z24E - news) and cars will be repaired for free.
Honda said it will install a cover plate over the switch to prevent any liquid ingress

THE PEN WONDER: The computer pen, or digital pen, is a computer invention that writes on paper and transmits the writing into digital media. Although touch screen devices represent a movement away from paper, approximately eighty-percent of businesses still use paper based forms. Many professions hand-write their notes, tables, diagrams and drawings instead of using tablets or other devices. The computer pen is comparable to a regular ink pen (even uses refillable ink) that writes on regular paper, except it has an optical reader that records motion, images and coordinates. The recorded data is then transmitted to a computer via a wireless transmitter. You can browse and edit your written notes, diagrams, tables, or drawings. A useful feature of this computer invention is that hand-written digital files can be easily converted into text fonts for use in word documents or emails. Digital pen technology was first developed by the Swedish inventor and entrepreneur Christer FĂ„hraues.

Talking With Your Appliances One of the cool new gadgets to hit the market is a touchscreen device that allows you to communicate with anything consuming energy in your home. Inventor Seth Frader- Thompson's new invention has been named one of the "best new gadgets" and "breakthrough ideas of the year" by Time Magazine. The EnergyHub Dashboard is a device that allows you to wirelessly communicate with all your appliances. The touch screen device receives wireless information from "plug- ins" in your electrical sockets and provides details of usage for every energy consuming product in the home - everything from your furnace and air conditioner to a specific light bulb, cell phone or alarm clock. It even tracks leak current (the power used by devices that are plugged-in but not being used). Although many of us are motivated to reduce our carbon footprint and power consumption by changing our lights or upgrading to Energy Star appliances, this doesn't tell us exactly what's happening with consumption. Our utility bills give us total power usage but nothing about what would happen if our thermostat was reduced by a few degrees or if a specific appliance was replaced, shut-off or used on a certain schedule. The EnergHub provides this type of information and allows you to control and schedule the energy usage of anything in the home.

The Xbox 360 console and Xbox 360 controller for windows are very successful game gadgets that have sold more than 54 million units worldwide. But the Kinect holds the Guiness record as the fastest selling consumer electronics device ever. Kinect sold approximately 8 million units in its first 60 days of release. The Kinect (combined usage of the words "kinetic" and "connect") is aptly named for a controlling device that plugs into an Xbox 360 console. It is a black plastic horizontal bar that uses specialized cameras, three-dimensional infrared light, distance, motion, facial recognition and voice sensors that enable players to use gestures, motion and speech instead of the Xbox 360 controller. On start-up, the kinetic bar moves and scans everything in a room. It not only locates you in the room but will identify you by tracking forty-eight features of your body - what you look like, how you move, and how you talk. It will know you, recognize you, and distinguish you (even a body part or facial gesture) from anyone or anything else in the room. Kinect creates a digital replica of you within the game. What you do - your virtual double will also do. It’s an experience that no other game gadgets can create. How It Works The Kinect technology was developed by Microsoft as "Project Natal" and was based upon a sensory system created by PrimeSense, a company in Tel Aviv. A projector floods the room with near-infrared light and captures the reflected rays. Complex algorithms then convert the data into a three-dimensional mapping of the area. It then processes this information with data collected from other sensors to identify and recognize everything in the room. Although this technology may be the ultimate in game gadgets, Microsoft believes it is the just the beginning of something even more innovative. Electromagnetic fields permeate our homes, our vehicles, and our neighborhoods because of electricity. Researchers have discovered a way for electromagnetic field frequencies to identify and recognize us. What this means is that you may soon be able to control anything electrical in your home with the wink of an eye, flick of a finger, uttering of a word, or whatever gesture you prefer. Source: msnbc.com; global.coolsculting.com; Best Wireless Keyboard This latest gaming gadget won best wireless keyboard at the Consumer Electronics Association Awards. The design and engineering award was given to IOGEAR for their wireless keyboard. The palm-sized device features an optical trackball, scroll wheel, LED backlight and auto on/off lid cover. This 2.4GHz hand-held keyboard allows users to manage their home theaters, pc's, tv or game consoles from any direction up to 33 feet away, whether stationary or mobile, by just plugging in a USB RF Receiver.

The Hidden Dangers of Cell Phone Radiation By Sue Kovach Every day, we’re swimming in a sea of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) produced by electrical appliances, power lines, wiring in buildings, and a slew of other technologies that are part of modern life. From the dishwasher and microwave oven in the kitchen and the clock radio next to your bed, to the cellular phone you hold to your ear—sometimes for hours each day—exposure to EMR is growing and becoming a serious health threat. But there’s a huge public health crisis looming from one particular threat: EMR from cellular phones—both the radiation from the handsets and from the tower-based antennas carrying the signals—which studies have linked to development of brain tumors, genetic damage, and other exposure-related conditions.1-9 Yet the government and a well- funded cell phone industry media machine continue to mislead the unwary public about the dangers of a product used by billions of people. Most recently, a Danish epidemiological study announced to great fanfare the inaccurate conclusion that cell phone use is completely safe.10 George Carlo, PhD, JD, is an epidemiologist and medical scientist who, from 1993 to 1999, headed the first telecommunications industry- backed studies into the dangers of cell phone use. That program remains the largest in the history of the issue. But he ran afoul of the very industry that hired him when his work revealed preventable health hazards associated with cell phone use. In this article, we look at why cell phones are dangerous; Dr. Carlo’s years-long battle to bring the truth about cell phone dangers to the public; the industry’s campaign to discredit him and other scientists in the field; and what you can do to protect yourself now. Cell Phones Reach the Market without Safety Testing The cellular phone industry was born in the early 1980s, when communications technology that had been developed for the Department of Defense was put into commerce by companies focusing on profits. This group, with big ideas but limited resources, pressured government regulatory agencies—particularly the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—to allow cell phones to be sold without pre-market testing. The rationale, known as the “low power exclusion,” distinguished cell phones from dangerous microwave ovens based on the amount of power used to push the microwaves. At that time, the only health effect seen from microwaves involved high power strong enough to heat human tissue. The pressure worked, and cell phones were exempted from any type of regulatory oversight, an exemption that continues today. An eager public grabbed up the cell phones, but according to Dr. George Carlo, “Those phones were slowly prompting a host of health problems.” Today there are more than two billion cell phone users being exposed every day to the dangers of electromagnetic radiation (EMR)—dangers government regulators and the cell phone industry refuse to admit exist. Included are: genetic damage, brain dysfunction, brain tumors, and other conditions such as sleep disorders and headaches.1-9 The amount of time spent on the phone is irrelevant, according to Dr. Carlo, as the danger mechanism is triggered within seconds. Researchers say if there is a safe level of exposure to EMR, it’s so low that we can’t detect it. The cell phone industry is fully aware of the dangers. In fact, enough scientific evidence exists that some companies’ service contracts prohibit suing the cell phone manufacturer or service provider, or joining a class action lawsuit. Still, the public is largely ignorant of the dangers, while the media regularly trumpets new studies showing cell phones are completely safe to use. Yet, Dr. Carlo points out, “None of those studies can prove safety, no matter how well they’re conducted or who’s conducting them.” What’s going on here? While the answer in itself is simplistic, how we got to this point is complex.

Mobile phone a good breeding place for germs: Want to hear something scary? Halloween's ghouls, ghosts and zombies have nothing on your smartphone. That little electronic device of yours can be downright frightening. Frighteningly germy, that is. Think about it. We take our cell phones everywhere. They live in our pockets and purses, rubbing up against loose change and the receipt from the gas station. We use them almost everywhere, and set them on nearly any available surface – the kitchen counter, the table at a cafĂ©, a park bench. We even share them with others. We pull them out not only to make calls, but also to share videos, play games, send emails and check on our Facebook friends and Twitter followers. Our smartphones are indeed our constant companions, and they are exposed to many bacteria. Add to this frenzy of activity the fact that germs thrive in warm places. Not only does your smartphone generate its own heat, but it also gets some help from your own body heat by spending time in your hands and next to your mouth. Plus, not many people think to disinfect their phones. It's no wonder, then, that smartphones are prime breeding grounds for bacteria. Typical phones have more bacteria than your office workspace, and some have even more than a toilet seat. Now that's scarier than any chain-saw massacre or drowned girl crawling out of a TV. An article published in 2009 in the journal "Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials" details a study involving the phones of 200 hospital staff members. The researchers found that 94.5 percent of the phones were contaminated with some kind of bacteria, many of which were resistant to multiple antibiotics. By also testing the participants' hands, the researchers were able to show that a significant number of germs were transferred from their hands to their phones, and vice versa. In fact, about 30 percent of the bacteria on the phones ended up on the owner's hands. Much of the disease-causing bacteria they found are transferred from person to person through touch, which means that once this bacteria is on your hands, you only have to then touch your eyes or nose for the bacteria to find an easy route into your body. This is especially frightening when you consider how often your phone hangs out only millimeters away from your face. While older flip phones have more nooks and crannies for bacteria to hide in, the flat screens of modern smartphones are not immune to bacteria. Studies like the one mentioned above have found colonies of streptococcus, staphylococcus and diphtheroids on people's cell phones. And there's even been one reported case of a person contracting an MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) infection – a so-called flesh- eating bug – from a phone. Scary stuff. For the most part, though, the bacteria that reside on your smartphone come from your own skin and mouth. It's other people's germs you have to worry about; think about that the next time you set your phone down in a public place or share your phone with someone. You're taking in their germs, as well as the bacteria they've picked up just by using their cell phones out in world. You're not only touching the phone, but also everyone and everything that phone has touched. Some companies offer anti- microbial shells and screen protectors to guard against these scary germs, but you can keep your phone relatively germ free by simply remembering to clean it occasionally. Wipe it off with antibacterial wipes, swab it with some rubbing alcohol or even roll it around in your damp hands the next time you use hand sanitizer. With just a few simple steps, you can banish the boogiemen bacteria from your smartphone for good.

Amazing news about alien7: can it be be true Three giant alien spaceships are again heading for Earth! Scientists predict the new ships will arrive in November of 2012. UFO encounters continue to increase – as documented on WWN. And today scientists at SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), an independent non-commercial organization, made a major announcement: “Three giant spaceships are heading toward Earth. The largest one of them is 200 miles wide. Two others are slightly smaller. At present, the objects are just moving past Jupiter. Judging by their speed, they should be on Earth by the fall of 2012,” said John Malley, the lead extraterrestrial expert at SETI. Three similar giant ships landed in China and the Indonesia Sea in November, 2011. They were identified as alien spaceships from Planet Gootan. Three more giant Gootan ships are headed her for November, 2012. Read two of WWN’s many stories about the three Gootan ships landing in 2011: THE STORY ABOUT THE LANDING OF THE THREE SHIPS IN NOVEMBER 2011 THE GOOTANS ARE HERE The new Gootan spaceships have been detected by HAARP search system. The system, based in Alaska, was designed to study the phenomenon of northern lights. According to SETI researchers, the objects are extraterrestrial spaceships. They will be visible in optical telescopes as soon as they reach Mars’s orbit – sometime in November of 2012. The US government has been reportedly informed about the event.

China launch a rocket carrying two satalites. Liftoff was at 3:10 a.m.september 18 2012. Beijing time. The 187-foot-tall rocket targeted an orbit with altitudes between 150 miles and 13,000 miles, and an inclination of 55 degrees to the equator. Chinese government agencies declared the launch a success, marking China's 12th space launchof the year and the 50th mission worldwide to reach orbit in 2012. Each spacecraft has on-board thrusters to raise its orbit and reach a circular altitude of about 21,500 kilometers, or 13,359 miles. The satellites launched Tuesday are the 14th and 15th Beidou spacecraftin the program. One more Beidou satellite is scheduled to launch into geosynchronous orbit before the end of 2012 to complete a regional network with navigation services to China and neighboring countries. The Beidou constellation, also known as Compass, is China's counterpart to the U.S. Air Force's Global Positioning System, which provides navigation services to military vehicles, precision munitions, civil aviation, personal cars, boats, and search- and-rescue forces. Now in operational testing for users across China, the Beidou system will provide global coverage with a constellation of 35 satellites by 2020, according to Chinese officials. The system has been used in transportation, weather forecasting, marine fisheries, hydrological monitoring, and mapping, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. The best service will be available to Chinese military and civil government users. Positioning information with an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 33 feet, will be released to the public worldwide.

A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was engraged because his computer had told him he was 'bad and invalid'. The tech explained that the computer's 'bad' command and 'invalid' resoponses shouldn't be taken personally. 9. An exasperated caller to Dell computer Tech support couldn't get her new Dell computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on" this foot pedal and nothing happened". The 'foot pedal' turned out to be the computer's mouse. 10. A confused caller to IBM told the technician that the computer had said it 'couldn't find printer'. The user had tried turning the computer screen to face the printer, but that his computer 'still' couldn't 'see' the printer.

Results published 8 June in IOP Publishing's journal Bioinspiration and Biomimetics, provide a stepping stone on the path to using autonomous robots in an open environment to monitor and control fish behaviour. In the future, water-based robots could potentially contribute to the protection of endangered animals and the control of pest species. The robot, created by researchers from Polytechnic Institute of New York University and Instituto Superiore di SanitĂĄ, Italy, was 15 centimetres long and spray-painted with the characteristic blue stripes of the zebrafish. The tail of the robot was mechanically controlled by the researchers to mimic the action of the zebrafish itself. When placed in a 65 litre fish tank, the movements of the robot's tail attracted both individual and shoals of zebrafish; the researchers believe that such capability was influenced by its bioinspired features which were optimised to increase attraction. For example, the robot was given a rounder shape to mimic a fertile female, which is preferred by both male and female zebrafish, and its colour pattern -- a magnified stripe width and saturated yellow pigment -- emphasized distinctive biologically relevant features. The robot was in a fixed position in the tank so that the tail movements could be controlled, recorded and, most importantly, associated with the behaviour of the zebrafish. The fish tank where the experiments took place was divided into one large middle section and two smaller sections at either end, separated by transparent Plexiglas. A total of 16 experiments were performed in which individual, and then shoals of, zebrafish were placed in the middle compartment of the tank and two stimuli were placed at either end behind the Plexiglass. The combinations of stimuli were: one fish versus an empty space; ten fish versus an empty space; ten fish versus one fish; the robot versus an empty space, and the robot versus one fish. A camera was placed above the tank to monitor the movements of the zebrafish, and statistical tests were performed to calculate whether the robot acted as an attractive, neutral or aversive stimulus and whether this relationship depends on the fish being isolated or in a shoal. Although the live zebrafish tended to prefer each other to the robot, when given the choice to spend time next to the robotic fish or an empty space, both the individual fish and shoal of fish preferred the robot. While the noise of the robot's motor was shown to decrease its attraction, the actual beating of the tail emphasized its attractiveness. The corresponding author, Dr Maurizio Porfiri, said: "These findings provide practical evidence that a species' preference for conspecifics may be used to inspire the design of robots which can actively engage their source of inspiration. "New studies are currently underway in our lab investigating the interactions between fish and robotic fish when they are free to swim together under controlled and ecologically complex conditions."

Yikes! Imagine all of those delicate complex parts of your mind being bombarded with waves of electromagnetic impulses... Approximately 70,000+ cell phones are sold each day in the United States (even during this recession). Over 120 million Americans use cell phones. And worldwide, it is estimated that approximately 1.1 billion+ people use cell phones. As the number of cell phones, cell phone towers, and other wireless antennas increase rapidly in industrialized nations, should you be concerned about the effects that regular exposure to radio frequency radiation can have on your health? From the early 1950's to the mid 1970's, the U.S. embassy in Moscow was purposefully bombarded by radio frequency radiation 24 hours a day. The U.S. embassy workers experienced what the perpetrators identified as "Radio Frequency Sickness Syndrome." After some time of concentrated radio frequency radiation exposure, the American ambassador developed leukemia. The next American ambassador also developed leukemia. Blood tests performed on embassy staff members showed irreversible DNA damage. You do increase your risk of getting brain cancer from gabbing away on your cell phone! How about the danger of getting these horrible problems: gliomas, meningiomas (A meningioma is a type of tumor that develops from the meninges, the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord), acoustic neurinomas (Acoustic neuroma is a non-cancerous tumor that develops on the nerve that connects the ear to the brain). And parotid gland tumours, The parotid gland is the largest of the salivary glands. The Israeli study looked at 402 adults with benign parotid gland tumors and 58 others who had malignant tumors of the parotid gland diagnosed in Israel from 2001-2003. According to the researchers, people who spent more than 22 hours a month on their cell phones were 50- percent more likely to develop cancer of the parotid gland than those who used the phones less often. The risk of developing a parotid gland tumor was even higher in people who generally used their cell phones on the same ear most of the time, and did not use a hands-free device. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic are warning that cell phone use, including hands-free devices-can affect male fertility. The information appears in the journal Fertility and Sterility. Men are warned to ensure that the devices are not kept in proximity to their testicles. Despite media reports and reassuring government statements that say there is no demonstrated danger in using the omnipresent devices, we are in deep trouble. his article will examine all aspects of electromagnetic radiation (from all sources) on your body. So let's calm down and learn more... We may think that radio waves are completely different physical objects or events than gamma- rays. They are produced in very different ways, and we detect them in different ways. But are they really different things? The answer is 'no'. Radio waves, visible light, X-rays, and all the other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are fundamentally the same thing. They are all electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation can be described like this: it is a stream of photons, which are particles (with no mass) each traveling in a wave-like pattern and moving at the speed of light (that's pretty darn quick). Each photon contains a certain amount of energy, and all electromagnetic radiation consists of these photons. The only difference between the different kinds of electromagnetic radiation is the amount of energy found in the photons. Radio waves have photons with low energy, microwaves have a little more energy than radio waves, infrared has still more, then visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, and ... the most energetic of all ... gamma-rays-yikes, leave me alone please! Ok, so we know (sort of) what they are now, but are they DANGEROUS? Numerous studies have produced contradictory results, yet some experts are convinced that the threat is real! (photo courtesy of: "Ethan Hein" on Flickr) Please read on... These sources of electromagnetic radiation are DANGEROUS! Power Lines Incredible amounts of electricity is created at power stations and sent across the country through wires that carry unbelievably high voltages. All power lines radiate electromagnetic fields. The question is: how much are the power lines near YOUR home radiating? The amount of "EMFs" coming from a power line depends on its particular configuration. Power companies know which power line configurations are best for reducing EMFs but most don't feel the evidence supports costly changes in the way they deliver electricity. Is that ok with you? Substations and Transformers A substation is an assemblage of circuit breakers, disconnecting switches and transformers. A key component of a utility's electrical distribution network depends upon numerous, small transformers mounted on power poles. A transformer looks like a small metal trash can, usually cylindrical. We've all seen them. Even when the electrical service is underground, you will often see a metal box (usually square) located on the ground near the street. Many people don't realize that when they see a transformer, the power line feeding the transformer is 4000 to 13,800 volts. OMG! The transformer then reduces the voltage to the 120/240 volts needed by nearby homes. Since these transformers can be seen in almost every neighborhood, they are a source of concern for sure. EMFs near a transformer can be quite high, but due to its small structure, but the field strength diminishes rapidly with distance, as it does from any point source. For this reason, having a transformer located near your home is usually not a major source of concern. Home Wiring If your home has high EMF readings, it is important to determine the sources of the EMF so that remedial action can be taken, if possible. Many times a particular room will have a higher EMF reading. Check to see if the electricity is coming into the house on the wall outside that room. When this is the case, it is usually a good idea to block off that room and only use it for storage purposes. Sometimes, the source of a high magnetic field is incorrect wiring. If you suspect that your home is wired improperly, obtain the services of a licensed electrician. Warning: Do not touch electric wires, even if you think the current is turned off. If you need to disconnect electrical circuits to determine the source of magnetic fields, you should call a licensed electrician of course, please stay alive and uninjured! Electric Blankets and Waterbeds Electric blankets create a magnetic field that penetrates about 6-7 inches into the body! Thus it is not surprising that an epidemiological study has linked electric blankets with miscarriages and childhood leukemia. This pioneering work was performed by Dr. Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper, who originally discovered that magnetic fields were linked to childhood leukemia. Similar health effects have been noted with users of many electric blankets and waterbed heaters will emit EMFs even when turned off. The devices must be unplugged to delete the EMF exposure Additionally, there is the issue regarding the vibrations that are generated by sleeping on standing water. There is less hard data in this area but some experts are concerned about the consequences. You would never catch me on a waterbed or with an electric blanket from now on - no way are you kidding me! STAY AWAY FROM ELECTRIC BLANKETS!!!!!!!! Electric Clocks Electric clocks have a very high magnetic field, as much as 5 to 10 mG up to three feet away. If you are using a bedside clock, you are probably sleeping in an EMF equivalent to that of a powerline! Studies have linked high rates of brain tumors with chronic exposure to magnetic fields, so it is wise to place all clocks and other electrical devices (such as telephones and answering devices) at least 6 feet from your bed. Fluorescent Lights Fluorescent lights produce much more EMFs than incandescent bulbs. A typical fluorescent lamp of a office ceiling have readings of 160 to 200 mg 1 inch away. So much for "going green." Microwave Ovens and Radar Microwave ovens and radar from military installations and airports emit two types of radiation -- microwave and ELF. All microwave ovens leak and exceed the safety limit. In addition, recent studies have shown that normal microwave cooking coverts food protein molecules into carcinogenic substances. Telephones and Answering Machines Telephones can emit surprisingly strong EMFs, especially from the handset. This is a problem because we hold the telephone so close to our head. Place the Gauss meter right against the ear piece and the mouth piece before buying a phone. Some brands emit no measurable fields and others emit strong fields that travel several inches....right into your brain. Answering machines, particular those with adapter plugs (mini- transformers), give off high levels of EMFs. Electric Razors and Hair Dryers Electric razors and hair dryers emit EMFs as high as 200 to 400 mG. This seems alarming, but we don't know if this is worse (or better) than a chronic exposure to a 2-3 mG field. Some EMF consultants recommend that hair dryers not be used on children as the high fields are held close to their rapidly developing brain and nervous system.

Is your CELL PHONE killing you softly? Oh, you're not worried? REALLY... Let's be really serious for a moment. You are using your (radiation emitting) cell phone every day aren't you? What are the effects of all that electromagnetic radiation surrounding us? Are EMFs Hazardous to Our Health? o you ever wonder about the effect of radiation from mobile phones on complex biological structures like your inner ear and even your eyes? What about on your BRAIN?
